In this blog post we will be looking at Lara Zankoul a photographer I looked at for my Final project on Ideas and Resolutions.
Lara Zankoul came from a Masters in Economics, and entered the photography world in 2008. Since then she has been exploring the world of conceptual photography. Zankoul is inspired by a quote from Elliot Erwitt “To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them”.
Zankoul photography illustrates ideas around “contemporary fairytakes… that explore the mystery of the human psyche”. Her images always have a dual reality to them. I’m very interested in Lara’s most recent work which is a solo exhibition called As Cold as White Stone. As Cold as a White Stone, is Zara’s interpretation of modern day human relationships, there is a “coldness and resistance”. I like the images from the series the models fit well within the frame and communicate the idea. With the rise in smartphones we are interconnected with everyone yet at the same time we fail to communicate with those around us. Walk into any public place you’ll find many people looking down at their smartphone instead of talking.
Lara shoots on two Canon DSLR’s a Canon EOS 7D and a 5D Mark 3. One of these cameras is a full frame DSLR and the other is crop-sized DSLR. The full frame camera provides very good image quality, while the crop sensor allows closer magnification to the subject. Lara is a BronColor ambassador which means she promotes BronColor lighting, which is high quality light that can be used in the studio and on location.
